The Road to 100% Renewable Energy for Municipalities

newton.jpg

More than 50 cities and towns across the United States setting a goal of 100% renewable energy. Over the past year Massachusetts has taken a leading role in this national campaign.

All over the state, 350 Mass volunteers are engaging their neighbors and their local governments in the fight for 100% renewables and a fossil free future.

So far our network has helped Salem, Cambridge, Framingham, Lowell, and Beverly all pass resolutions for 100% renewables in their city and town councils. Our network goal is to pass at least ten resolutions for 100% renewable energy by the end of 2018.

Municipalities who pass 100% renewable energy resolutions will:

1) Set a goal of reaching 100% renewable energy citywide by a specific date

2) Commit to taking at least two concrete and immediate steps to move the city or town closer to 100% renewable energy for all.

Want to be part of it? First, check out our campaign handbook, which will walk you through the steps for running a campaign for 100% renewable energy in your town or city! You can download it here.

Then, fill our our 100% Renewable Cities Interest form and our organizers will follow up with you to help get you started!

What ever you do don’t make the mistake of believing wood biomass is clean & renewable energy. Burning wood is most assuredly dirty and in the Climate Crisis trees are not truly renewable in the time frame we are faced with. Onward!

Thanks for the practical handbook. I will share with my alderperson and City Sustainability Coordinator. It will be helpful as we try to move a 100% clean energy resolution forward. Judy, Wisconsin

100% Renewable Cities need to be aware that certain forces in the Commonwealth are trying to have industrial-scale wood biomass classified as “renewable energy”. It is not. While some folks may be burning wood to heat their homes (and hopefully getting their firewood in a truly sustainable manner), large-scale wood biomass schemes want to turn our forests into pellet or chip plantations, when we desperately need all the trees we can protect in order to sequester CO2 from the atmosphere. We do not have 100 years to wait for destroyed forests to grow back and recapture all the carbon lost from logging. It’s a Climate Crisis. More Trees/Less Sleaze!

For Boston, would this mean more than supporting B-CAN’s Community Choice Energy?

PLEASE don’t fall for the scam of promoting wood biomass as a renewable. In this age of climate chaos industrial-scale biomass in pellets or chips is NOT truly renewable. Any legislation on Beacon Hill addressing renewable energy needs to reflect this fact. For more info go here: http://whrc.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/PB_Bioenergy.pdf
